The Washington state patrol report on missing women shows that white women account for 70% of missing persons cases while American Indian/ Alaska Native women account for 7%. At first glance this might suggest white women face a greater risk.
This interpretation misses critical context: White Women make up the majority of Washington state female population, whereas indigenous women comprise only about 1.9% this means indigenous women are missing at a rate far disproportionate to their populations size
The urban Indian health institute analyzed this data and calculated the rates of missing women per 100,000 by racial group. their finding show indigenous women are missing at a rate several times higher than white women, revealing a profound and alarming disparity
when looking at the number of missing women by race, it might seem like some groups are more affected simply because their total number count is higher . But raw counts don't tell the full story because they don't consider how large each population group actually is
using rates such as missing women per 100,00 people we can see the disproportionate impact on indigenous women and others who might seem less affected if we only looked at raw numbers
''Seeing those numbers made my chest feel heavy.
We know it's happening but to see it laid out like that? It's painful, but necessary."
‘’hurts that we even need data to prove our pain.’’
After analyzing the data I then decided to do small discussion groups and talk and spark discussion on why having accurate data matters and community members their thoughts
