Diishootaa, my name is Princess Asencio, and I come from the crow tribe and the flat head nation in Montana. I was born and raised in Seattle Washington. I created this space to honor the lives of the women and girls in my family or community and for so many others whose voices were silenced too soon.
I began advocating for my community when I was given the opportunity to speak about something that truly mattered to me. At first, I didn't know much about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and this made me feel like I was supposed to already understand everything like I wasn't doing enough. it was a heavy realization.
However instead of turning away from the discomfort, I leaned into it. I started unlearning what I thought I knew and began to re-learn with an open heart and open eyes. It was overwhelming at times. Unraveling generations of silence, pain, and misunderstanding. But it was also deeply meaningful.
This website is a reflection of that journey I took with my capstone project. A space I can share what I learned, and to honor those whose lives were cut short, I hope to create something that will continue when I leave this institution.
Imp still learning. I am still growing. And I am committed to using my voice to bring visibility, healing, and justice to our people.
with love and strength,
Princess Asencio
