During the third stage of the Design Thinking process, we are ready to start generating ideas. We have come to understand our target group and their needs. We have analysed and defined our observations in the Define stage, and ended up with a problem statement focussed on people:
“How to improve the quality of remote workers’ lifestyle during the lockdown?”
With this problem statement we can start to identify new solutions to the problem and we can start to look for alternative ways of viewing the problem. To make sure we have a complete scope of possible solutions we need to brainstorm and think of multiple possible solutions no matter how of Outside-the-box they may seem.
After we defined our problem statement we came together for a brainstorming session through the use of the online whiteboard. During 5 minutes of silence we wrote down the ideas that came to mind and after this silent brainstorm we proceeded to work off of each others ideas.
All the ideas collected were based off the 5 main needs we had found during the Define Stage and, after a long discussion, we decided to follow up with 5 top ones that included (or could have included) all of the other ones.
After the first brainstorm session there were already a lot of ideas to go through. After analysing all of them the top 5 ones that were picked to be the best ones (listed below). An ever harder task was to choose only one out of all of the best ones in order to follow up with the Prototype Phase. It took us around a week and various meeting to decide, but in the end the highlighted one was picked by the whole group:
App for travellers
Time Management Chrome extension
Investments / Financing Tips sheet
App/website for remote workers (exercises, challenges, more off-screen time)
Educational VR game for kids
By the end of our first Ideate Session, the whole group had agreed on creating an App or Chrome Extension that would allow online users and/or remote workers to keep track of their own mental and physical health without discarding their priorities.
The way we imagined it, the app would start off by creating your profile (no personal emails needed), after completing you customer profile, you would be asked to fill a list of priorities that you encounter on your daily life (ex: prepare lunch, team meetings...) and specific activities you would like to accomplish but often do not have time to do (ex: drink more water, call your parents...). After ordering the priorities by importance scale, you would be asked to agree on receiving personalised notifications on your personal devices.
Finally, your onboarding is complete and you can see how the app would benefit your life and health by automatically generate a tailored time-management schedule of your activities and sending you hourly reminders based on your previously mentioned preferences.
Not even a week had passed that our first virtual meeting with the coach got close. Aimee (our course coach) had never seen/heard about our plan before so during the meeting we introduced her to our project starting from the beginning of our story.
At first she seemed interested in the plan and gave us some real good tips to improve the visuals and written styles, but what impressed us was when she brought to the table a new perspective regarding our "app for remote workers" idea that made us see it from a different point of view...
She opened our eyes on the importance of the Social aspect of this potential app and made us notice that out of one project, 2 very different though useful ideas could easily come out. We noticed that instead of one contains-all app we could prototype 2 with different scopes, taking into account the same target group:
Daily challenges randomly generated based on your profile
Encourage off-screen time
Unlock achievements based on your successes
Compete and challenge your friends
Keep active even during quarantine
Keep track of your priorities and improvements
Receive notifications or reminders based on your priority list
Maintain a healthy lifestyle even during quarantine
Promote mental and physical health with daily tailored suggestions
Time management advisor
The block is almost over. Exams are getting closer and so it is our product deadline. After the free week occurred on the 42th week, the whole team got back together and went through the latest feedbacks each one had collected over the vacation period. We decided to share our interviews and results with each other, but still chose to keep it separate in order to have a better view of what where the clear pros and cons of the 2 apps.
Every one got different results, and we spent a whole meeting trying to choose between one or the other App to follow up with. It was a tough decision because different ideas and points of view had to merge into one product. Finally, instead of fighting over one or the other option we decided to combine the best traits of the 2 and coming up with a whole new idea. And that is where the third round of Ideating started off.
The process went smoother then the previous ones because all the team members had a clear view on the direction and final goal of the new discussion. We had to combine the pros from both apps and create a new one that was capable of satisfying the same needs, keeping in mind the same target group and the objective of improving the old versions.
After drawing out the outlines and most important aspects of this new App, we were all happy with the new idea and we decided to go directly into the Prototyping Phase.
