During the Define stage, we will put together the information we have created and gathered during the Empathise stage. This is where we will analyse our observations and synthesise them in order to define the core problems that we have identified up to this point. We will seek to define the problem as a problem statement in a human-centred manner.
The Define stage will help us to gather great ideas to establish features, functions, and any other elements that will help us to solve the problem(s) or, at the very least, allow users to resolve issues themselves with the minimum of difficulty.
In this stage the group started discussing ideas related to the notes we had collected from the previous stage. The discussion sessions were conducted on a online white board where the main goal was to find out what the needs of the interviewees were. We all shared our experiences and stories and found some similarities among the people that we talked with, so we were able to summarise the outcome of the empathy conversations into the following 4 needs:
After analysing the needs, it was time for us to define our main target group. Due to the unusual and unpredictable situation, we decided to focus on the target group that we saw as the closest and most important in this period: Remote Workers.
The selection process of the focus group lasted around 2 weeks, and here's some of the options we took into account before making a decision: Remote workers, online students, Argentinians, travellers during the pandemic and parents with kids at home.
The detailed process document that the group used to make this decision can be found under Appendices.
In order to agree on one problem definition, each team member was asked to come up with its own statement based on the needs previously mentioned. We then tried to look for the similarities in our problem statements which would help us come up with one main problem which would help everyone in a certain way. The goal of this activity was to converge different ideas into one and to involve all members into the creation of the problem statement.
Listing below are the statements each one of us came up with:
How to improve the remote workers’ quality of time without getting out of the house?
How can we get people working from home off the screen.
How to keep in touch with relatives during the lockdown without losing family customs such as “Sunday’s lunch meetings"?
How can people working at home have more stability? (through time management, social interaction etc)
How can we change remote worker’s perspectives of the reality of the current situation?
How to improve ‘Family Time’ during the pandemic?
After collecting all of the individual statements, we went through the list and highlighted the key elements of each point. This step helped us gaining data regarding what should our final problem statement contain. This process lasted for around one week and after our thinking it thoroughly, the team decided the following to be the final problem statement that will be used for the future process steps:
“How to improve the quality of remote workers’ lifestyle during the lockdown?”
(by maintaining a healthy mindset while managing time efficiently and installing safe social interaction with others)?”
