Courses Offered

Department of Molecular biology offers a unique 5-Year Integrated M.Sc. Molecular Biology programme after PU/10+2 Science stream. The course is divided into 10 semesters with 2 semesters each year. Credit system has been followed for this course. Students have to take on an average 20 credits/semester and will be earning 200 credits at the completion of the course. These credits are offered in the form of course papers, projects etc.

In first year of course students are taught with basics of botany, zoology, mathematics, physics and chemistry giving them a basic understanding and serve as requisite to study applied subjects in upcoming semesters. Communication skills are also taught. In next four years students are dealt with various fields of biology including Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Immunology, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Bioinformatics and Ecology. Laboratory practices are also conducted in each semester with respect to paper.

Each semester has 3 components. First two components are evaluated as internal assessment whereas the third component is final exam held at end of each semester. Assignments are given for each internal assessment on all respective subjects in each semester. Seminars are conducted as part of internal assessment. There are two seminars: major- presented in front of all department members, minor- presented in class.

In seventh semester the students are taken to research laboratories and biotech industries in and around Mysore which exposes them to current research being carried out in the same. During eighth semester students are taken on an educational tour to different research institutes of our country. Tenth semester is devoted exclusively for carrying out project work in reputed research institutions.

Department also offers Doctral programme (PhD) in Molecular Biology for which students are recruited based on University of Mysore PhD guidelines.
