About Us

The Department of Molecular Biology has its unique logo with a superscript on ribbon " विद्यातुराणां न सुखं न निद्रा " - A student engaged in pursuit of knowledge knows neither pleasure nor sleep. The laurel leaves depicts the quality of learning and acquiring knowledge. The circle with name of our college and the department uphold unity and endless efforts towards quality education. The circular DNA signifies Molecular biology that encompasses myriad disciplines in the curriculum cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and proteomics. The shield represents the stability of coordinator, longevity of faculty and durability of students with no compromise tradition of this whole family

Yuvaraja’s college is an autonomous college of the prestigious university of Mysore, Mysore, which is said to be the academic capital of Karnataka. The college was conceived by his highness Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the erstwhile king if the Mysore state. The colleges began functioning with the introduction of a two year intermediate course in arts and science in 1928 and it was upgraded to a first grade college in 1948 and since then it has led science education in the state. Further, M.Sc. courses too were conducted in the college prior to 1960. Prince Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar was a student of this college during 1934-36. Later, as the maharaja and the chancellor of on the University of Mysore, he inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations on 30th November 1954. It was to commemorate this event that the college was renamed “Yuvaraja’s college”. In the year 1989, the college celebrated its diamond jubilee and the platinum jubilee was celebrated during the year 2003-04. It is heartening to note that the college has attained the autonomous status from the academic year 2005-06.

The five-year Integrated M.Sc. course in Molecular Biology was established in 2005–2006 Prof. B. K. Jagadisha is very special to the erstwhile students of our department, as he was the first Course Co-ordinator of the Department of Molecular Biology from the year 2005 to 2008. He has played a key role in development and growth of Department of Molecular Biology. After his retirement Dr. N S Devaki became the coarse coordinator in the year 2009 and she reigns as a pillar of the department, she established the department’s infrastructure and facilities. Under Dr. Devaki’s control and supervision, the department has reached great heights.

Molecular biology explores cells, their characteristics, parts, and chemical processes, and pays special attention to how molecules control a cell’s activities and growth. Looking at the molecular machinery of life began in the early 1930s, but truly modern molecular biology emerged with the uncovering of the structure of DNA in the 1960s. As a science that studies interactions between the molecular components that carry out the various biological processes in living cells. The birth and development of molecular biology was driven by the collaborative efforts of physicists, chemists and biologists. As mentioned, modern molecular biology emerged with the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. It is a rich integrative science that brings together biochemistry, immunology, molecular genetics, biochemical techniques, enzymology, biophysics, genetic engineering, molecular development and differentiation, genomics, proteomics, computer applications, research methodology and other various advanced aspects of biological sciences. Insights and experimental approaches drawn from all these fields of knowledge are integrated in the course, which will profoundly help the students to blend with the explosion of new data in molecular biology in the 21st century.

The department is blessed with the inspiring teaching of many dedicated invited faculty, and other faculty who have taught beyond their regular hours to increase the knowledge horizon of the students. Thus, a foundation is set in the Department of Molecular Biology to create and inculcate research attitude in students. This is also done by encouraging the students to go to Indian Science Academies’ Summer Fellowships and other internships offered by specific institutes across the world during the course of their study. Many scientists from various renowned institutes have come on various occasions and extended their support to the Department by providing valuable inputs by being members of the Board of Studies; conducting workshops, delivering special lectures etc., which has helped to shape the career and give direction to the ambitions of the students. Apart from the faculty of the Department, some of the great professors from the University of Mysore have been extending their teaching to our students, thereby enabling them to attain their career goals successfully. Overall the Department of Molecular Biology grew to be the best department in the college, as was declared during inspections of the college by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
