The open house is the official kick off for the season! It provides the opportunity to be introduced to staff, student leaders and the Band Parent Association. Can I participate in Fall sports while in marching band?
Yes, there are a number of members who participate in sports and marching band. Our rehearsals occur in the evening following sports practices. Students will be responsible for communicating all scheduling conflicts to both their coach and Mr. Porco. Students must be able to to maintain strong academic standing and meet participation requirements in both activities.
Can I participate in marching band as a middle schooler?
Yes, incoming 8th graders are eligible for participation. 7th graders will be considered by recommendation.
Can I participate in marching band if I attend GCIT?
Yes.
What is the time commitment?
Marching band is considered a varsity sports and the time commitment is similar to a sport's practice regiment. Expect 2 rehearsals per week as well as weekend obligations through September and October.
What is band camp?
Band camp is a required week of extended rehearsals in mid-August where a bulk of the field show is learned. New members who are unable to commit to the band camp schedule may not be considered for participation in the marching band for that season.
Do I need experience?
No. There are many instructors and student leaders who can help you get started in whichever section you are interested in.
What are competitions like?
Starting mid-September, the marching band competes each Saturday through the end of October. A competition day typically includes an extended rehearsal followed by travel to an area high school, where our band competes against other bands of a similar size and classification.
What is the Atlantic Coast Championship?
ACC's is held in Hershey, PA and is the final competition of the season, where we see the most bands in our classification from around the east coast.
How long is the season?
Summer rehearsals start in July and the season ends at the end of October.
Do I need to supply my own equipment?
No. We recommend that students use their personal instrument if possible, but specific marching Instruments will be provided as needed. Students participating in Drum Line, Front Ensemble, and Colorguard will be provided equipment.
How do I get involved as a parent?
The Deptford Band Parent Association is a volunteer organization that collaborates to offset the costs of running a competitive marching band. They are seeking parents who can volunteer time, resources and professional experience to help the program thrive.
Is there a fee to participate?
There is no fee, but students are expected to participate in DBPA fundraisers throughout the season to cover costs for the program.
