The Denver Aeolian Music Club was founded in 1958 by eight women – all active musicians – who wanted a venue to keep up their performance skills and listen to the music of others. By 1963, many other musicians – men and women - had joined. At the time of the club’s 50th anniversary in 2008, Aeolian’s roster had listed over a hundred musicians. Instrumental members have performed on piano, organ, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, harp, recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, and bagpipe. Vocalists - sopranos, altos, tenors and basses – perform as soloists or in ensembles. Members’ talents have included accompanying, conducting, arranging and composing.
The original purpose of the club was to inspire its members to higher standards of performance, understanding and appreciation of fine music. The Aeolian Collect is below:
Members pay annual dues. Each year, after expenses are paid and at the recommendation of the membership, Aeolian Music Club makes a gift to a youth vocal or instrumental organization.
Aeolian Music Club continues to meet monthly from September through June; meetings are usually in members’ homes and active members perform twice a year. At each meeting, the secretary keeps attendance, a written list of all musical selections and performers, and makes a record of the minutes from business meetings. Aeolian’s historian compiles the information for publication including the performance schedule for the year, a list of officers and members, guidelines for membership and the club’s by-laws.
Today, Aeolian Music Club has many talented members who perform regularly. Many others simply participate as listeners.
