Step by Step Instructions: How to Register to Vote "Absentee" and how to obtain "Absentee" ballot
*Reminder that you must be 18 or older, an American citizen, and a New Hampshire resident by the day of the election in order to register to vote.
Requirements to register to vote "Absentee"
If one of the following is true circumstances is true, you are eligible to register and vote "Absentee":
You will be absent from the town or city on the dates/times when the Supervisors of the Checklist meet to receive voter registration applications: 6-13 days before the September 13, 2022 primary and 6 -13 days before the November 8, 2022 general election.
Absence includes an employment commitment that prevents you from attending a session of the supervisors. The term “employment” includes the care of children and infirm adults (with or without compensation)
You cannot appear in public because of observance of a religious commitment;
You are unable to vote in person because of a physical disability; you are a victim of domestic violence and have an active protective order or are participating in the Attorney General’s address confidentiality program
You are a person confined to a penal institution awaiting trial or because of a misdemeanor conviction.
**A person incarcerated because of a felony conviction is not eligible to register or vote while incarcerated.
If any one of these apply to you, follow these instructions to complete your absentee voting registration:
1) You can request absentee voter registration forms and instructions from your clerk before requesting an absentee ballot.
2.) Follow the instructions on the application form and absentee registration affidavit. Ensure you provide all required information. Call your clerk’s office if you have any questions.
3.) If you require assistance due to being blind or have a disability, you may have someone else assist you.
4.) Complete and Sign the Absentee Registration Affidavit: Use the “disability” affidavit if you have a disability. Use the “temporarily absent” affidavit if you will be unable to attend the supervisors’ sessions. Have a witness observe you signing the Absentee Registration Affidavit. Have the witness sign the form.
5.) If you are registering before applying for and receiving an absentee ballot, include copies of proof of identity, age and domicile with the completed Absentee Registration Affidavit/Absentee Voter Registration form. The absentee voter registration affidavit must be witnessed.
Identity +Age:
A driver’s license or non-driver ID from any state
Citizenship:
A birth certificate, U.S. Passport/Passcard, or naturalization document
**A New Hampshire Real ID compliant driver's license is NOT proof of U.S. Citizenship
Domicile:

If you do not have a document proving your domicile, you can prove domicile by signing a "Domicile Affidavit" (will be provided to you).
6.) Mail the completed forms and copies of proof to your clerk.
Follow these instructions to obtain an absentee ballot:
Request your absentee ballot from your town/city clerk as early as possible.
You may also download an Absentee Ballot Application to give (In-person/email/fax) to your town clerk.
You may check the status of your absentee ballot here. Using this link, you can find out if your clerk has received your ballot request, when the absentee ballot was sent to you, and when it was received back in the clerk's office.
**If you request an absentee ballot and are not registered, the clerk will send you both your absentee ballot and your absentee voter registration forms and instructions.
***If you are registering, have received your absentee ballot, and are returning both the absentee registration and marked absentee ballot in one envelope place the marked ballot in the affidavit envelope, sign & seal. Place the completed absentee voter registration form, affidavit, and proof documents in the outer, mailing envelope.
