Professor N.L. Andrews

While a student at Madison University (today Colgate University), Newton Lloyd Andrews became a member of the Adelphian Society. He was a longtime friend of James M. Milne, a Founding Father of the Delphic Fraternity who was also instrumental in founding the Beta Chapter of Delphic at the Oneonta Normal School in 1889.

Newton L. Andrews was born in Fabius, New York on August 14, 1841. He was the son of Nathaniel and Catherine G. Remsen and studied at Newark High School in New Jersey. He graduated from Madison University in 1862. In 1868 he became a professor at Colgate and Head of Greek Language and Literature, a position he held for 50 years.

In 1872, he was one of the editors of “Half-Century History of Colgate University.” N.L. Andrews also became a key administrator at Colgate University, serving as the librarian from 1868 to 1880, and was appointed the first Dean of Faculty. He was the acting president of the university from 1890 to 1895.

Andrews married Cynthia S. Burchard of Hamilton, NY on September 6, 1865, and Charlotte P. Harbach of Newton Centre, Massachusetts on December 27, 1888. He received his Ph.D from Hamilton College in 1878 and his LL.D. from Chicago University in 1883.

Andrews passed away on September 24, 1918, in Hamilton, N.Y. His contributions to the Colgate community were cemented in the dedication of Andrews Hall in his honor in 1922.
