In the early planning stages, Haziq, my partner, and I have came up with a detailed plan on how we would use website coding to help my parents with the business operations. During our consultation with our learning facilitator, Mr. Kok, on 21 April 2021, we shared our plan with him, and he was very happy with our idea. He even gave us suggestions on how we can execute our plan more effectively, and we added it into our refined learning proposal and our learning contract.
However, although our plan to implement an on-demand food ordering website where customers take orders from scanning a QR code at my parents' coffeeshop stall was accepted by our learning facilitator, the plan was rejected by my parents. They said that although the plan was good, but it was not viable in their coffeeshop stall business because they think that the technology will hinder their business operations especially when half of their customer base is not tech-savvy. It would also cause heavy disruptions to other customers too as their normal standard operation for taking orders has always remained constant with the other stall owners in the industry. Shifting away from the traditional method will gain huge public backlash and the transition will be inconvenient for their customers.
On top of that, adopting a new website system to improve their food ordering operation will take time for them to get acquainted. However, due to their work dynamic in their workplace with the employees, adapting the system is close to impossible, and it would actually add more workload to them.
When Haziq and I heard the news from my parents, we were very upset because our plan could not work in their coffeeshop stall, and we had to change our plan completely.
Thankfully, with deeper research, Haziq and I found that we can still implement our plan with some slight modifications by leveraging on their pre-food ordering customers by modifying our idea from an on-demand food ordering website to a pre-food ordering website.
To ensure that no problems as such happens again and better understand their business operations, I went to their stall to work as a cashier for 7 days, between 13 and 16 May 2021 and between 20 to 22 May 2021. During my experience, I learnt how to take orders from the customers, package the food for them, and collect payment from them. I also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges of being a cashier for their coffeeshop stall.
Throughout my experience working for them, it was very tiring. Furthermore, I was bound to make some mistakes with the food orders almost every time I worked for them.
P.s. More detailed description of their problems can be found in the comprehensive research analysis written by me.
After we got better understanding of the problems they face, and the comprehensive report with their requirements was fully written in the document. We consulted with our learning facilitator again on 2 June 2021 to show him our progress.
He said that the report was impressive and really covers majority of the problems related to their business operations. After we showed him our progress, we told him that we are going to start working on the wireframing of the website to showcase our vision for the website.
Along the way when we worked on the project, we consulted my parents regularly for their feedback and opinions on the design of the website. We also used the free online wireframing tool, Canva to make our vision into reality.
All in all, Haziq and I spent 20 hours over the span of 11 days to work on the wireframing, and this is our collective effort for the wireframing.
After we are done with the wireframing, we met up with Mr. Kok and the co-assessor to do the oral interview and show them our progress in the wireframing on 16 July 2021.
