In my art, I aspire to communicate my interest of the surreal, the fantastical, the random, and the passion for art that I hold. While I adore sculpture and jewelry-making, my creative outlet of choice is illustration. When it comes to my illustrations, you'll see two types: colorful works and monochromatic works. While both categories tend to contain similar themes and subjects, the techniques and materials differ.
My process varies between projects because I enjoy experimentation, but I do play favorites with mediums. It may be obvious if you've looked at my portfolio, but I consistently use colored-pencil, ink, and graphite. In all of the illustrative instruments, I am most attached to these. So, after years of practice, I've learned their techniques, strengths, and flaws. With this knowledge, I aim to utilize them carefully and effectively to create artwork that I'm proud of.
Amongst the two categories of my illustrations, multi-colored and monochromatic pieces. In my multi-colored works, I explore the randomness of my imagination. Specifically, I combine surrealist content, fantastical themes, and dynamic compositions. In contrast, my monochrome drawings incapsulate surrealism but the style is more minimalistic. Personally, I have found this simplicity successful when applied with portraiture and sketches/linework.
Inspiration is an important part of my creative process. I utilize the ever-growing album of photos I’ve captured to use as references for these portraits. While crafting my reference image, I may add, remove, or distort details before drawing. In the end, each portraits’ meaning is enhanced by these twists. I find that a drawing can convey meaning better than the original photograph. Overall, though my work may seem complicated or random, it all symbolizes something broader. Each work is an emotional landscape where meaning is derived from the whole, not the individual parts. I use my work to reveal something universal yet often hidden; the experience of being human. If viewers can connect with the random hotchpotches I create, then I’ve succeeded.
