Daughters of the Winter Queen covers the fascinating lives of Elizabeth Stuart, the Winter Queen (she was named "the winter queen" because she only ruled for one winter), and four of her daughters Princess Elizabeth, Louise Hollandine, Henrietta Maria, and Sophia. The book is very fascinating and demonstrates the accomplishments of these women that aren't well known. Elizabeth got the respect of Descartes, a legendary philosopher; Louise became a respected artist (one of her paintings is studied in AP World); Henrietta Maria became a queen, a massive feat for a family that was so publicly disgraced; Sophia is an ancestor of the current British royal family, and helped shape the English monarchy into the system it is today. Similar to In the Shadow of the Empress, this book tells history like a drama. It allows even people who aren't very interested in history to get attached to these figures.
Disclaimer: Similar to In the Shadow of the Empress, it also touches on more adult themes at times.Â
