This costume is an original design inspired by Song dynasty Hanfu. It began with a cut of silk I purchased second-hand - a duo chrome silk satin, woven to be pink on one side and burnt orange on the other. From this fabric sprung a lively, warm color scheme that just so happened to match an incredible near-by photo location. In addition to being fortuitous, this build involved tons of dyeing techniques which are, quite frankly, my favorite thing to do. The overcoat was dyed to match the pink silk, and the skirt and sash were gradient dyed. The fan is entirely hand made, and the painting was done using thickened silk paints. This project also introduced me to Ronghua techniques, which I used to create the silk flower hair pieces. 

Lady Windmaster from Heaven Official's Blessing

A build spanning two years, Lady Windmaster was a deeply technical project that tested my knowledge and creativity in the fiber arts. All layers of the piece involved custom dyeing, painting and embroidery. The skirt, which began as six yards of bleached chiffon, was gradient dyed and then silk painted in an ink-wash style. The numerous upper body layers involved gradient dyeing, batik resist techniques, and various silk embroidery techniques. The top-most robe was dyed using stencils and thickened silk paints to a pattern of gradiated emblems. Both the front apron and hand fan were silk painted, using wax resist experimentally to create texture. The carved leather waistbelt is another piece I am particularly proud of.

Flame ombres, fire emblems and glinting red gems characterize this build. Both the skirts and sleeves are four layers each of layered chiffon, creating the illusion of a costume lit from within. The crown is a piece I'm particularly proud of - it's a hand sculp, casted in resin, and then faux-enameled.
