“The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea.” - Isak Dinesen
The Beginning:
My name is Debra Godwin, and I currently reside in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area. Over the years, I have worked in various roles within marketing, sales, and learning development, primarily in the mortgage industry. Each role offered valuable lessons in project management, communication, and leadership. My time in the mortgage industry also taught me the importance of adaptability and how to communicate effectively with diverse teams, manage projects, and solve complex problems — skills I now realize were foundational for my next pivot. Navigating that environment demanded flexibility and resilience, qualities that would become essential as my journey continued to evolve. These experiences were instrumental in shaping the professional I am today.
After many years working in the mortgage industry, in October 2022, I faced a turning point when my entire learning development team was laid off due to the economic downturn in the mortgage industry. My role as a training manager was gone, and I was suddenly left unemployed and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was at a turning point for my life and career, and needed to decide what was next. This prompted me to do some self-reflection, and ultimately led me to reimagine my career yet again. I asked myself three key questions: How could I turn this negative event into something that had a positive impact on my life? What would I enjoy doing every day? How could I do that as my career?
The rapid growth of the educational technology field caught my attention. The field of educational technology aligns with the skills I have developed throughout my career: creativity, problem solving, and communication. I wanted to continue in a field that offered similar intellectual engagement, and I decided it was time to acquire new skills that would be transferable to other industries. As I reflected on my previous role as a training manager, I realized that I thrived in the role and had found great personal satisfaction in developing learning initiatives. My passion for learning, teaching, and problem solving all converged in this space. I knew that a career in learning development and instructional design would provide the fulfillment I was seeking.
Educational Technology: A New Path of Growth
Prior to starting the program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, I had a solid foundation in content creation experience from professional roles in marketing and in learning development. I had gained valuable skills in those roles, but felt limited by the technology tools available to me. I wanted to explore more advanced tools and methodologies, especially those involving emerging technologies and AI. While I was able to create effective content, I recognized that the rapidly evolving field of educational technology offered much more potential for innovation, creativity, and impact. My goal was to expand my skill set in areas like eLearning, microlearning, mobile-first design practices, curriculum development, multimedia content creation, instructional design, and technology leadership, all of which would allow me to be more versatile and effective in developing learning experiences.
My educational journey took a focused turn toward Educational Technology and Learning Development, when I decided to pursue my Master of Education in Educational Technology with certifications in eLearning, Instructional Design, and Technology Leadership at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This decision required tremendous courage and the willingness to overcome self-doubt. As a non-traditional student, returning to academia after many years in the workforce was both exciting and intimidating. This decision aligned with my passion for lifelong learning and my desire to leverage technology to create meaningful educational experiences.
The educational technology program was instrumental in helping me achieve that, and it has helped me build a strong foundation in educational theory and technology. By engaging with new technology and learning design frameworks, I’ve broadened my understanding of how to create dynamic and impactful content that can meet diverse learning needs. These educational frameworks allowed me to analyze educational needs, develop and design curriculum and instructional materials, implement my learning plans, and evaluate the effectiveness of my instructional processes and designs. It has been both challenging and rewarding to see how these new tools can enhance learning outcomes, and I am excited to continue applying what I’ve learned in future roles.
Through the program I delved into instructional design, eLearning, and technology leadership, all of which further prepared me to transition into corporate learning development. I have come to appreciate the critical role that technology plays in modern education and training. Whether in academic settings or corporate environments, effective instructional design and the strategic use of technology are essential for achieving learning outcomes. The program enabled me to become technically proficient in the use of many platforms including Articulate Storyline and Rise, Canva, Synthesia.IO, Eleven Labs, YouTube, Canvas LMS, Blackboard LMS, Camtasia, Scoop.it!, Creative Commons, Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Suite — Cloud, Sites, Docs, Sheets, Forms, as well as many others. I look forward to applying these skills and using technology and tools to create engaging, impactful learning experiences for a wide range of learners.
Looking Ahead: The Next Great Adventure
Since completing the program, I have been pursuing roles in corporate learning development. I have had the privilege throughout my career to work with outstanding leaders and diverse teams, and to participate in projects that have broadened my perspective and honed my skills while learning the importance of strategizing, collaboration and effective communication in achieving organizational goals. Acquiring my Master of Education (M.Ed.) has added to my arsenal of valuable skills and abilities. Whether leading or supporting a team on a project, I have strived to foster an environment where ideas are valued, and dialogue is encouraged. In a corporate learning environment, effective instructional design and technology, its tools and methodologies, are fundamental for achieving observable, measurable, and obtainable results, as well the learning objectives set by the corporate stakeholders. Obtaining the knowledge and skills required for mastery of the Educational Technology program helped me to become an asset to my future learning development team. I am committed to creating educational experiences that are engaging, effective, and impactful whether through traditional training methods or innovative eLearning solutions.
As I reflect on the various stages of my journey, I am struck by the unexpected ways in which life’s challenges and opportunities have shaped me. The skills I developed in academia as an undergraduate student — critical thinking, research, and analysis — served me well in the Ed Tech program, and the experiences I gained in the mortgage industry, particularly in leadership, project management, and communication, have prepared me to excel in the field of educational technology. In many ways, each chapter of my life has built upon the previous one, even when it didn’t seem like they were connected at the time.
This journey has taught me that it is never too late to pursue new goals and that embracing change can lead to unexpected and rewarding outcomes. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of resilience. Every setback, whether it was the decision to put my academic dreams on hold or the sudden loss of a job, has provided an opportunity for growth. These challenges forced me to rethink my goals, adapt to new circumstances, and find new ways to pursue fulfillment.
Success is rarely a solo journey — it is built through collaboration, support, and the exchange of ideas. I am deeply grateful for the mentors and colleagues who have supported me along the way. Their guidance and encouragement were instrumental in helping me navigate the ups and downs of my career and the educational technology program. I also owe much thanks and appreciation to the faculty of the College of Education and the Educational Technology program for their patience, guidance, support and "tough love".
Upon completing my M.Ed. in the Educational Technology program, and embarking on the next great adventure in my life, I find it essential to reflect on my past experiences, the learning moments, and the aspirations that drive me forward. My educational journey, while it was sometimes frustrating and challenging, was definitely worth the effort, and I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. I am eager to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to develop learning programs that make a tangible difference in the lives of others. I carry with me the lessons of resilience, adaptability, and the power of lifelong learning as I step into this new chapter. My story is far from over, and I look forward to seeing where this path will lead next.
