Description:
A systematic research work has been initiated towards development and validation of ex vivo osseointegration models using engineered bone tissue for rapid preclinical evaluation of biomedical implants. The proposal has also been submitted for funding to Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
Hypothesis:
Pre-clinical animal model based studies of drugs and implants are cumbersome, time consuming and are often un-predictive. Moreover, the field of tissue engineering has progressed substantially and now can offer lab-grown human tissue or organs as therapeutics, screening and diagnostics based alternatives. On the basis, it was hypothesize that in vitro engineered bone tissues can potentially replace, fully or partially, the need pre-clinical animal based osseointegration studies which are essential and time consuming step during the research and development of any orthopedic implant.
