Social Outreach

Despite the progress made by India over the last few decades, marginalized rural women still fall in the lowest rung of the socio-economic-political ladder. As the world economic forum predicts, it would take a hundred and fifty years more to narrow down the gender gap to zero. Hence, the need of the hour is rightly to empower women.

So, we (Oindrila Dey, Nandini Das, Subhajit Saha and myself) have taken up a non-profit initiative to improve lives of a few down-trodden tribal women from Purulia, (a backward district of West Bengal, India) through pragmatic actions and purposeful partnership. These women, who are otherwise chained in discrimination and exclusion, have enough potential to challenge the odds and rise up to

prosperity for themselves and their families. But all that they lack is the courage in their nerves. ‘Nakshikantha’ is here to hold a mirror in front of these marginalized rural women and walk them through the path of self dependency.

We organize workshops on primarily ‘Kantha’ making, crochet stitching and other embroidery crafts in a group of 12-14 women. This is an ardent effort to improve their marketable skills thereby moving them toward the consciousness of power.

Mixing aesthetics of the rural and need of the urban, ‘Nakshikantha’ deals in hand-made quilts and other embroidered and crochet products that are of immense usage in regular life. The best part about their products is that you can dwell in the utility regimen without creating a hole in your pockets.
