Have a wonderful summer! To prevent the "summer slide", consider the rigorous Algebra through Calculus
From Algebra to AI: Building Tomorrow’s Innovators
At Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, we are committed to developing mathematically literate, computationally skilled, and future-ready students. Our math and computer science rigorous curriculum supports learners from foundational concepts to the highest levels of problem solving, logic, and real-world applications — including artificial intelligence.
Students begin with a strong foundation in Algebra 1 and progress through Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus before advancing to college-level coursework in AP Calculus AB or BC. Our instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world modeling, preparing students for success in STEM fields and health sciences.
Course Progression:
Algebra 1 (Fresman)
Geometry Magnet/PreAP Geometry (Fresman/Sophomore)
Algebra 2 Magnet/PreAP Algebra 2 (Fresman/Sophomore)
AP Precalculus (Sophomore/Junior/Senior)
AP Statistics (Sophomore/Junior/Senior)
AP Calculus AB (Junior/Senior)
AP Calculus BC (Junior/Senior)
Key learning experiences include:
Real-world modeling in medicine and biology
Graphing technology integration (Desmos, graphing calculators)
Emphasis on conceptual reasoning and multiple representations
Opportunities for math competitions and enrichment
Our computer science track begins with AP Computer Science Principles, where students explore algorithms, data, the internet, and the societal impact of computing. For those interested in coding, we also offer opportunities to dive deeper into programming fundamentals using languages like Python and Java.
Topics include:
Programming logic and control structures
App and game development
Ethical computing and cybersecurity
Hands-on projects and collaborative coding
New to our STEM curriculum is the AI Foundations course, introducing students to one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century. This course blends computer science, ethics, and data analysis as students explore how AI is reshaping fields like healthcare, diagnostics, robotics, and more.
Course highlights:
Machine learning basics
Neural networks and decision trees
Applications of AI in medicine and biotechnology
Ethical considerations and responsible AI use
Our Goal:
To prepare students not just for college, but for leadership in emerging fields. Whether they pursue medicine, research, or engineering, DeBakey students graduate with the analytical skills, computational fluency, and future-ready mindset needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
