About DeafAA.org
DeafAA.org was created to improve access to AA meetings for Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and late-deafened individuals. It builds on decades of community-driven efforts to make recovery spaces more inclusive and easier to navigate.
Between 2000 and 2009, a late-deafened AA member developed the DHH12S website, one of the earliest online resources dedicated to listing accessible 12-step meetings. After the webmaster could no longer maintain the site, its information was shared with the Portland Deaf Access Committee, helping preserve valuable knowledge for the community.
In 2020, Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and late-deafened individuals in recovery came together to create a shared spreadsheet of accessible 12-step meetings. This grassroots effort was widely circulated and became an important tool for connecting people to meetings that met their communication needs.
In November 2023, DeafAA.org was launched by the same community member who created the original DHH12S site. Using information gathered from the community spreadsheet, the website now provides a centralized, up-to-date directory of accessible AA meetings.
DeafAA.org is rooted in collaboration, accessibility, and service. Its purpose is simple: to help Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and late-deafened alcoholics find AA meetings where they can fully participate, connect, and heal.
