This month of October, with Halloween approaching, there are lots of options for deaf-friendly events. The Central Coast Deaf Events and News group on Facebook is a thriving community of over two thousand individuals who come together to share information, resources, and support.
This group serves as a vital communication channel for the deaf community, allowing members to stay informed about upcoming events, news, and opportunities in the region.
Tri-County Glad (TCGLAD), a nonprofit organization with 35 years of service to the deaf community in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties, plays a crucial role in promoting deaf-friendly events on the Central Coast.
Not only does TCGLAD spread the word about upcoming events on social media, but they also offer a range of services including communication access, employment development, and community education.
"Our mission is to ensure equal access to the communities while promoting social, recreational, cultural, educational, and vocational welfare of the deaf," explains Ricardo Niño, the community advocate of TCGLAD .
Tive, a company founded in 2019, has developed an innovative and helpful app to ease communication for the deaf, hard of Hearing (HOH), Children of Deaf Adults (CODA), and interpreters.
The biweekly Saturday meetings sponsored by Tive offer a space for individuals to connect and engage with each other, further strengthening community ties.
These events are typically held in public areas, allowing for greater exposure which promotes awareness, acknowledgment, and interest for people outside of the deaf community.
With the support of organizations like TCGLAD and innovative companies like Tive, the deaf community on the Central Coast can continue to thrive and grow.
