Do you know what a cochlear implant is? Did you know that having one is not the same as having hearing aids?
Hearing aids amplify sounds, while Cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve, through a small electronic device that goes under the skin.
According to the National Institution of Deafness and Other Communication Issues (NIDCD ), approximately 118,100 devices have been implanted in adults and 65,000 in children in the United States.
Hearing through a cochlear implant is not the same as natural hearing and involves a period of adjustment and relearning. However, it can greatly improve the quality of life for many people, including Kimberly Pashby, who shares her personal journey with a cochlear implant in this story.
