The Dead Road

Among the boundless marches of the West - Siberian lowland through the low polar forests and tundra, winding its way for hundreds of kilometers stretches like a thin ribbon the deserted railroad Salekhard - Igarka. Due to the loneliness of the region and almost complete absence of cultural life, the railroad and everything that at one time was connected with it had long been preserved almost intact. And today, fifty years later, this gigantic monument of GULAG (The Chief Directorate of Concentration Camps) of the late Stalin epoch lies under the open sky, witnessing the appalling conditions of the convict life and chronic inefficiency of the communist economy.

At the end of eighties the author organized a few expeditions to the East part of the railroad site. The paper tells about these expeditions and briefly describes the history of the Dead Road construction.
