Sharing news regarding the passing of retiree Raymond Blomme
This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Elaine Popp, President, Durham College.
Dear colleagues,
I am sad to share the news of the passing of our former colleague, Raymond (Ray) Blomme.
Ray began his career with Durham College (DC) in 1974 teaching photography in the Faculty of Media, Art and Design, where he remained until his retirement in 1998. He was an award-winning photographer and music lover who enjoyed participating in DC talent shows and playing the piano at Employee Appreciation events. After his retirement, he remained very involved in the Durham College Retirees’ Association and was a member of its executive for many years.
Ray will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature and sense of humour.
Please join me in keeping his family – including his son, Daniel Blomme, a faculty member in the Faculty of Social and Community Services – and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time.
As always, support to our DC community during times of loss is available. If you need counsellor services or support, TELUS Health (formerly LifeWorks) services can be accessed anytime by phone at 1-844-880-9142 or TTY Service at 1-877-338-0275 or at www.workhealthlife.com.

Journalism Student Request - January 23, 2024
We received the following email from a current journalism student. If you are able to help / be willing to be interviewed please reach out to Clayton directly as soon as possible, I believe that his assignment is due this Friday the 26th.
-------
My name is Clayton DeMaine. I am a student journalist at Durham
College, Oshawa. I am doing a freelance piece for True North about the
challenges that professors face with students who have disabilities in
fields that their disability will prevent them from doing well in.
For example, students with severe social disabilities in journalism
programs who can't obtain or conduct interviews.
I'm contacting you because I have heard professors discuss this
privately, but they have yet to be willing to talk publicly about
their challenges. I was hoping to connect with someone who recently
retired from DC and can discuss these challenges without fear of
losing their job.
Please let me know if you can help.

Sharing Very Sad News about Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, Kevin Baker
Dear colleagues,
With a heavy heart and profound sadness, I share with you the passing of our colleague, Dr. Kevin Baker, Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, due to an accident that occurred in Australia this weekend.
Kevin was a well-known friend and colleague to many at Durham College (DC). He was passionate about higher education and leadership, and was an advocate for student success, program diversity, and community partnerships. He was larger than life – a creative and innovative thinker who loved to share his ideas with others and a respectful listener, always appreciating unique perspectives on issues in support of others. A kind, approachable leader, Kevin always made time for colleagues and students.
Kevin joined DC in 2011 as Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies & Employment Services and then became Principal and Executive Dean of the Whitby campus in 2015. He returned to the Oshawa campus as Executive Dean of the School of Business, IT & Management (BITM), now the Faculty of Business, in 2018.
A true free spirit and proud of his indigenous heritage, he always had a ready smile and story to share. Kevin loved spending time with colleagues, friends and family when he wasn’t logging thousands of miles on his motorcycle – his true passion. His trip to Australia this month was in recognition of his upcoming 60th birthday in November. He truly believed there was always something for which to be thankful.
During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers go out to Kevin’s family, who have requested privacy at this time, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic news. DC flags at both Oshawa and Whitby campuses will be lowered to half-mast for 24 hours on Tuesday, October 10, to honour Kevin's life.
We will share funeral service information when it becomes available.
It is always so hard to lose a DC colleague. During times of loss, it is especially important that you know that assistance is always available. Should you need support, please reach out to TELUS Health (formerly LifeWorks). Services can be accessed anytime by phone at 1-844-880-9142 or TTY Service at 1-877-338-0275 or at www.workhealthlife.com.

Dear DCRA,
After more than 15 years of distinguished service, Don Lovisa, Durham College’s (DC) president, has elected to not renew his contract which ends in March of 2024. Your input is a critical first step in our search process. Therefore, you are invited to complete a survey, designed to gather your valuable feedback and thoughts about the qualities you believe are essential of our next leader. Your opinion will be taken into consideration throughout our decision-making process. I encourage you to complete the survey so DC can continue to lead the way as a top post-secondary institution.
The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and can be accessed online. It will be available until September 8 at 11:59 p.m. If you require an accessible format of the survey, please contact Phelps, the executive search firm we have hired to help with the recruitment, at communications@phelpsgroup.ca.
If you’d like to enter the draw to win one of three $50 Amazon gift cards, please provide your name and contact information at the end of the survey. Announcing upcoming retirement of Ken Babcock, director, Athletics and Recreation
This message is being shared on behalf of Tara Koski, dean, Students.
It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of our highly respected director of Athletics and Recreation, Ken Babcock, after 36 years of dedicated service to Durham College (DC), in June.
With Ken leading the way, DC’s athletic program has flourished, with numerous provincial and national championships, and a strong commitment to the academic success of our student-athletes. Additionally, under Ken’s leadership, Ontario Tech University’s athletics department and services were created in 2003, and he continues to provide exemplary service to the university through our shared facilities.
Ken has been an integral part of the campus community and has made an indelible impact on the lives of countless students, coaches, and staff members. We are grateful for Ken’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in building powerhouse varsity programs, creating inclusive recreational sports and constructing world-class facilities.
His deep love of the game will be missed by many on campus and beyond through Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), and local community groups.
We wish Ken all the best in his well-deserved retirement. A celebration event is planned for Monday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at 2200 North in the Campus Ice Centre. If anyone would like to contribute to a gift or share their well wishes, they are invited to contact Angela Werner or Brianna Christopher.

Loved playing tennis, some buddies are here today Neil and Bill.
Cross Country skied, swam regularly, tried scuba diving (just once).
Did a lot of hiking, only got lost a couple of times, once with his daughter Karen.
Could say he liked gardening, not really, that was mainly Erika bossing him around.
Hobbies: Reading, Stone carving. Wood carving, Painting, Dabbled in the stock market.
Music. From Handle, to The Beatles to Led Zeppelin.
Clive’s passion was writing. Ten books published and yes, they are still available on Amazon
Religion: non denominal, quiet spiritual man that loved nature and believed that upon his death his spirit will join a collective, a universal consciousness.
Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather. Kind, Generous, optimistic, Intelligent
