We invite researchers and practitioners to contribute to this workshop on participation regulation in human–robot and human–AI interaction. This workshop aims to explore participation not merely as a byproduct of interaction, but as a designable and controllable dimension that shapes coordination, responsibility, and social meaning.
We welcome submissions presenting theoretical insights, computational models, empirical findings, design explorations, and position statements.
We invite contributions related to (but not limited to) the following topics:
Theoretical foundations of participation in social interaction
Conceptual models of conditional participation and availability
Participation as a design dimension in interactive systems
Norms, expectations, and the distribution of responsibility in interaction
Participation regulation in human social interaction
Waiting, hesitation, silence, and withdrawal as coordination mechanisms
Ignoring and passive disengagement as interactional strategies
Attention, availability, and responsiveness as social signals
Participation mismatch and coordination breakdown
Cognitive and developmental perspectives on participation
Conditional engagement in social robots and AI agents
Participation-aware architectures and control policies
System-level control of interaction dynamics
Adaptive availability in multi-agent or multi-user settings
Modeling participation dynamics in long-term interaction
Experimental paradigms treating participation as an independent variable
Longitudinal and in-the-wild studies of participation regulation
Evaluation beyond task success, efficiency, and usability
Metrics for coordination, responsibility, and relational sustainability
Ethical implications of non-always-responsive AI
Social and societal impacts of persistent AI availability
Participation regulation in education, healthcare, and collaborative work
Designing for sustainable human–robot coexistence
We welcome:
Extended abstracts (up to 2 pages, excluding references)
Short papers (up to 4 pages, excluding references)
Submissions should follow the standard RO-MAN formatting guidelines.
Templates for manuscript preparation are available on the main conference website:
Authors should use these templates to prepare their manuscripts and submit them in PDF format.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed for relevance and quality. Accepted contributions will be presented as:
Spotlight talks, or
Poster presentations
We encourage submissions from MSc and PhD students, as well as researchers exploring new or unconventional ideas.
These submissions may include:
Early-stage research
Position papers
Methodological proposals
Submissions (up to 4 pages, excluding references) should:
Clearly define the research problem
Motivate its importance
Outline a proposed approach or experimental design
Accepted authors will participate in interactive discussion and breakout sessions, receiving feedback from peers and senior researchers.
We also welcome participants who wish to attend the workshop without submitting a paper. All attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions, breakout sessions, and collaborative activities.
