Libia A. Quintero Usma - Goncalves

Artist Statement

My Artistic name is my Maiden name: Libia A. Quintero Usma, born in Colombia, since this Libia Amparo is the one who had been yearning to express her-self in color since early age.

As a human being, I am a myriad of beautiful and incredible things, I like to learn, to write, to sing, to dance and to express love and color.

Painting is a joy with many ups and downs, which requires to challenge our fears, constantly update our knowledge data, and never leave those brushes at rest, but above all, to be willing to go forward despite the five thousand painting disasters that are awaiting us in the way.

Color was a call since always, for years my heart was longing to express itself in color, but unfortunately, I was told that art was not a choice; cowardly, I reinforced this message telling myself: I did not know how to draw. I was afraid of embarrassing myself in front of people, and I opted for writing what people call poems, in the privacy of my room.  In 2008, with the complicity of a friend form my childhood, I released a book called “A ti, Sueños y Poemas”

In 1984, a dear friend of mine introduced me to watercolor, that was the moment in which I decided to overcome my fears, face the challenge, and started this journey.

In 2003, I attended some watercolor classes in the Worcester Art Museum, since then, I have been searching in the world of color, harmony, and form. I have been trying all kinds of art or crafts to express the beauty I see around.

I have learned that when a hobby becomes a passion, there is nothing that can stop it from manifesting itself. Painting used to be a necessity, now it is my passion.

Sometimes color and shapes come easily alive on the 2-dimensional surfaces, some other times it is just impossible to recreate a line, but I will continue trying until the day my body refuses to follow my spirit’s command.  I will paint and get together with other artists until the end, just for the pleasure of it.

There are so many pathways to cross, so much to paint.  My style and themes continue to evolve in different directions. I know, I have a great deal of things to learn yet, that is why in 2022, I enrolled myself in an Art Mayor at Worcester State University, but today and just for today, I am thrilled with the level of progress I have achieve as an artist and teacher.

I invite you to feel the joy of creating, invite you to express yourself in color, defeat that fear and amaze yourself and the world with a masterpiece that is waiting to be created by you.
