How has Literature
shaped me?
We are very near to ending our academic journey at the department. After completing the study of literature throughout the five years it is necessary to look at the idea about our previous year. What were we believing about literature?.Are there any changes in my life after studying literature for five years? Literature itself is a very vast term to understand. When I was in school days I used to read some short stories and poetries and some Gujarati books but at that time I thought that literature is not only a piece of any poem but as I entered in B.A. Then I came to know about the real meaning of literature.Let me share my personal experience here.It seems negative on some points but it was the reality. When I was doing B.A. I was facing so many problems studying literature at the place where Mobile wasn't allow.Yes, that was the reality of my journey till 2015 to 2018.I have completed my Graduation in the college where they are not allowed to keep mobile in the classroom.Well I am very grateful to @Nimesh Dave sir(former student of Department of English,MKBU), learned a lot from him while in second and third year of the graduation.
After studying Western theories and literature, my view of the world has changed a lot.I have become more LIBERAL. I have become very open minded to everything and everyone. Now I don't like some types of stupidity.Literature has helped me to grow as a better human being. It also helped me to understand myself and has given identity to some of my weird feelings.I remember the first impression of literature on me is from the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeI come to know that everyone has a evil side in their inside. But we can't understand their views sometimes. As quoted in the text that….
“All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone, in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil.”
― Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
After studying 'Othello' by Shakespeare, I realised why time is more precious to us.I keep on sharing daily activities on social media and at that time many people said why you are doing all this marketing like things. At that time I remembered the quote from Desdimona…
“Kill me tomorrow , let me live tonight”
‘Othello’-Act 5,Scene 2
We are doing all this things for documentation.Because without documenting people won’t trust on you.In this era of science and digital humanities it is very necessary to keep evidence handy.Because we can’t remember everything and no one will rely on our memory. While talking about memory I remember the recently studying novel ‘The Only Story’ by Julian Barnes. What I learned from this novel is that don’t rely only on the memory.Keep documenting the things regularly.I really like the beginning of this novel..
“Would you rather love the more, and suffer the more; or love the less, and suffer the less? That is, I think, finally, the only real question.”
― Julian Barnes, The Only Story
Literature is made up of feelings, but it does not make people emotional fools. It does not teach only feelings, it gives you history the way no one gives. It provides you the critical eyesight which only few have. Derrida tells you that you can deconstruct the well built building by finding the loose stone of that same building only. There is no need to attack from outside. Literature has taught me that life is not black or white, it has grey shade. It has rainbow. The symbol of rainbow and queer theory has taught me to accept the things the way they are, even though it looks strange to some. It has taught me that nothing is perfect, not even nature. It has taught me that there can be multiple views of the same thing. It has taught me that there is nothing like one and only truth, it differs and every point of view should have given place somewhere.
