Hardening of granular beds in rivers

Strain hardening

In 2019, I did an internship at the University of Pennsylvania, supervised by Dr. Douglas Jerolmack and Dr. Paulo Arratia. Since then, I started to be involved with sediment transport, especially at the onset of particle motion. During my stay, I examined the transient response of a sediment bed to change in the applied fluid shear stress, by using an annular flume projected by Dr. Morgane Houssais. This is an amazingly rich problem that connected two distinct fields of inquiry: hysteresis in sediment transport rates in rivers (mainly connected with compaction) and "shear jamming" in dense granular materials.
