Not just a writer, you say? It's true!
I currently teach at a high school in Texas, specifically senior English which, in the state of Texas, means British Literature. This is my sixth year teaching, and I absolutely love getting to work with my students and helping them grow as readers and writers. I try to craft lessons that give them the opportunity to express themselves creatively, like drawing storyboards of a chapter of Frankenstein or writing songs about Hamlet and Ophelia, and they never cease to amaze me.
Oof, it gets hot in Texas, but it's still possible to garden. I love the unpredictable and ever-changing nature of a garden, and nurturing a thriving and relaxing retreat. When I bought this house, the backyard was completely bare, except for weedy grass. It's been ten years of trial and error, pouring paths and patios, building a pavilion, planting ornamental trees, to get it to something that actually feels like a garden. It's not done, and it will never be done, because gardens constantly change and evolve. I'm glad the garden takes me along on its journey, even if it is a harsh taskmaster.
When I was young, my mother and her many sisters took up quilting on a lark, collaborating on appliqued squares. It didn't last long, but they produced some family heirlooms. It wasn't until my early 30s that I decided to take it up myself. Over the last few decades, I produced a couple dozen quilts - all hand pieced, hand quilted, and hand bound. I like to make lovely order out of chaos, and chopping up bits of fabric to reconstruct them into something new satisfies my soul. This Queen of Hearts is one of my favorites.
