As an intern, my research skills, time management, and empathy have proven invaluable. I also efficiently manage my responsibilities, balancing coursework, clinical work, and research tasks. To enhance my networking skills, I've been pushing my boundaries by seeking guidance from mentors and connecting with medical professionals. Furthermore, I'm working on my presentation skills, seizing opportunities to share my work and seeking critical feedback. My internship has deepened my grasp of neuroscience by applying theory to real-life scenarios, reinforcing my academic foundation. This, in turn, strengthens my pre-dental aspirations by exposing me to the interdisciplinary nature of healthcare and fostering vital patient-centered skills. As I end of the year, I believe that my internship has allowed to me grow a greater interest in both medical research and medicine as a whole.Â
Reflecting on my internship experience, I recognize that I faced significant challenges related to time management and expanding my role within the team. Initially, balancing my academic responsibilities, my internship, and personal life proved difficult, which highlighted a need to improve my time management skills.
In dealing with these challenges, I took a crucial step by choosing to communicate openly with my supervisors about my struggles. This act of vulnerability was transformative. It not only facilitated a support system but also allowed me to receive valuable guidance on prioritizing and managing my commitments more effectively. My supervisors helped me identify opportunities for taking on more significant responsibilities within the team, which enhanced my learning and engagement in the internship.
From these experiences, my key takeaway is the importance of honesty and accountability. Being upfront about my challenges not only led to practical solutions for time management but also opened doors for greater involvement in my role, enriching my professional experience. Moving forward, I plan to continue employing these strategies of open communication and proactive involvement to not only maintain the successes I've achieved but also to overcome any new challenges that come my way. This integrated approach will be fundamental in my continued personal and professional development.
Some skills on the survey that I am more confident using since fall is independence and integration/application. Earlier in the year, I had a hard time being upfront with my challenges with my supervisors. However, as time went by, I was able to get closer with my supervisor and ultimately build a strong relationship. A strong relationship became the backbone in seeking help when needed. Consistency would be something that I would like to work on after LHSI. I often get overwhelmed and have a hard time getting back into routine, which affects my consistency in my daily things.
As I enter my junior year of school, I want to experience going to medical conferences and networking with likeminded people. I will do this by attending the CMDA conference, which is a medical convention for healthcare professionals. In addition, I will grow my role in the research team by working at the site throughout the following year.
