History of the Fort Davenport Chapter, NSDAR
The Fort Davenport Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in Four Corners, Florida, on March 2, 2025, with 17 organizing members. Our Organizing Chapter Regent was Hannah Dennis. The settlement in the area now known as Davenport was established in 1838 when the U.S. military set up Fort Davenport during the Second Seminole War, about 12 miles north of the present site of Davenport. The fort was one of a number built at 20-mile intervals along a trail from Fort Brooke to Fort Mellon. The fort only lasted a few years. The fort was named for Colonel William Davenport, who served as the local U.S. commander in the war.

We have members from all walks of life: working women, retired women, college students, young moms, grandmothers, and everything in between. We are a friendly and welcoming bunch who enjoy having fun and doing good for our community.
We also have a local Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) Society which our chapter sponsors: the Phoebe Cunningham Society. Children and grandchildren from birth to age 22 are welcome to join us at C.A.R. activities! It is a great way to instill patriotism, citizenship and love of heritage in children and teens while helping them make new friends and participate in service projects and activities.
Our chapter currently meets every other month in the Four Corners area. Meetings take place in January, March, May, July, September, and November. During and between meetings, we participate in numerous service projects, events and social outings across Polk County. Our chapter has numerous active committees focused on serving active-duty military families, veterans, local schools, literacy projects, American Heritage crafts, and more. We hope you will join us for a meeting and see what DAR membership is all about!
