History
The Phoebe Cunningham Society was originally formed in Kissimmee, Florida on December 28, 1985. The Joshua Stevens Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) in St. Cloud, Florida sponsored this original society, and their chapter has continued to work with us since our re-organization. The society formed with 14 charter members, and two more members joined during the first year, making a total of 16 charter members. Our first Senior Society President was Mrs. Lillian McCrary and our first Society President was James N. McCrary.
The society was named for Phoebe Cunningham, a patriot who lived in West Virginia and was attacked by Native Americans. She was kidnapped and held hostage by them for three years, and her four children were killed in front of her. After being released, she reunited with her husband, Thomas, and started a new family. Thomas also served in the Revolutionary War.
The society disbanded sometime before 1998, but was re-organized in Kissimmee on May 11, 2024 by Hannah Emmett-Dennis with six re-organizing members. Hannah was then appointed to serve the first term as Senior Society President. She was assisted in re-organizing by Senior Society Vice President, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Boykin, whose son served as the first Society President since re-organization.
