Travel

Most international participants will be arriving in Belgium via the Brussels airport. For travel options to and from the Brussels airport:

For local travel in Belgium, you may either choose to rent a car or use the public transportation options. Renting a car would certainly give you a lot of freedom, though Belgium has a good railway infrastructure and Hasselt (capital of the province of Limburg) is well connected to Brussels. There is a direct train, every hour, from the Brussels airport to Hasselt with a travel time of about one hour. If you will already be in Brussels for the Saturday party, or would like to first stop by Brussels anyway, you can also choose to take a train from the airport to one of the larger Brussels train stations and then go to Hasselt. For the Belgian rail website:

Most participants not travelling with a car will be arriving at Park Molenheide via Hasselt. The municipality of Houthalen-Helchteren (the location for the Sunday activity) is 13km north of Hasselt and Park Molenheide is another 10km north of Houthalen-Helchteren. To go to Park Molenheide from Hasselt on your arrival day the most convenient option would be to take a taxi from the Hasselt main train station. (There is a taxi station next to the train station.) For taxi service at other times, there are a number of companies, such as https://www.redcab.be/ (+32 4 68 175 175) and email Info@redcab.be). Please note that Uber is not reliably available outside of Brussels.

Travel between Park Molenheide and the other two nearby activity locations (Houthalen-Helchteren on Saturday and Hasselt University on Sunday) will be arranged in the form of car-pools and shuttle. (Please follow the upcoming conference announcements.)

Traveling to La Chaufferie (the party venue in Brussels) on Saturday:

  • If you are staying in Brussels, we recommend taking the metro or your rental car. La Chaufferie is close to the Petillon metro station (on metro line 5). More info on local public transport in Brussels can be found here: https://www.stib-mivb.be/?l=en
  • For people coming from Hasselt (e.g. if they will already be at Park Molenheide), there is a train station close to La Chaufferie, called Etterbeek station. Otherwise, you may simply take the train to Brussels Central station and take the metro from there to Petillon (line 5, direction Hermann Debroux) as above.
