In this section, we'll explore the ways that role that data visualization has in creating insight and why it's a valuable tool for education and storytelling. Let's start with a few points on what the roles of data visualization has:
As stated earlier, numerical data can be overwhelming to present and communicate to your audience. Whether they are customers, learners or your leadership, the analysis is only important as the decision or action that they inspire. Data visualization configures your users who may not be experienced in the content you're providing or limited in knowledge about analysis but also allows them access to complex information.
Data visualization allows the user to process the information clearly and in a way that doesn't overload cognitive ability. The way that data is visualized allows the reader to have the cognitive off-load to make space for information processing that accommodate that leads to formulating decisions. Visually, the learner can intake all of the information and be able to focus on the key points on what normally would be a large amount of data on a spreadsheet.
Data visualization is also the ability to be able to connect the learner not just from a knowledge standpoint, but also from an affective standpoint as well. Click on the video below to hear about how data visualization tells stories.
In this section, we'll explore the question if Data Visualization can persuade the audience.
Is data visualization persuasive? 📋📫
Data Visualization is persuasive by touching on the knowledge and affective domains.
Persuasion is the process of changing an attitude. Experimental research has shown that statistical data is more convincing than anecdotal or simple data. To change the conversation from "to convince" into "to persuade", visualization of data allows the creator to craft the message using design, themes and selection to persuade the learner into deciding by making them have a feeling on top of the data being presented.
Reflection Activity🪞
Check out this graph from the US Department of Education (2019) below on data about the dollar amount that borrowers of certain Master's programs usually request for student loans. From the information in the graph, you can see from the visualization which Master's program requires the most amount of borrowing to complete the masters programs.
Are you persuaded by the data on the graph? What makes it persuasive?
(There is no written activity, just think about it!)

When has a graphic pursuaded you. If you can, share an infographic or data picture or visualized piece of data that gave you a learning moment?
Guidance: What kind of emotions did it illicit and how did it do that? What did you learn?
