Social Brain Train Privacy Policy

The Social Brain Train app was designed by psychologists and neuroscientists at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Cambridge, and created on the Cogniss platform. For more information on the Cogniss Privacy Policy, see https://www.cogniss.com/privacy-policy.

What information does the Social Brain Train app collect?

The information you provide is personal information for the purposes of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW).

At sign up the app collects the following data:

● Email address

● Username

● Consent, that is we ask you to indicate whether you agree for your data to be used by researchers.

Information collected during app usage:

● When you use the app we collect data on your mood and performance during the different training tasks. The performance and mood measures are:

o Reaction time, that is how long it takes you to make a response

o Accuracy, that is whether the response you made in a game is correct or not.

o Mood ratings, we also collect your response on mood rating questions.

How do we use your personal information?

Your personal information is solely used for research purposes. All research conducted with your data has been approved by the University of New South Wales’ Human Research Ethics Committee (HC210835). The app is compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation GDPR.

The app has been approved by the University of New South Wales’ Human Research Ethics Committee for use in individuals 13 years and over.

Why do we collect this data?

The purpose of the research is to investigate whether the app can be used to prevent mental health problems from developing in young people. To evaluate the app’s effectiveness, we need to analyse the information listed above.

Where is the data stored?

Data collected with this app is stored securely on MongoDB cloud services in its Sydney data centres.

Cogniss share this information with the researchers that designed the app and that are listed in the ethics approval HC210835. The information is stored on the research group’s secure and encrypted drive.

Fully anonymized (that is data from which you cannot be identified as a user by any means) will be made available to other researchers through open access data repositories. This data will not include any identifying information such as email address and username.

Advertisement and marketing

No advertisements are included in the app and no data is shared for marketing purposes.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation you have a number of important rights which you can exercise free of charge. In summary, those include rights to:

fair processing of information and transparency over how we use your use personal information

withdraw your consent to our use of your personal information

access to your personal information and to certain other supplementary information that this Privacy Policy is already designed to address

require us to correct any mistakes in your information which we hold

require the erasure of personal information concerning you in certain situations

receive the personal information concerning you which you have provided to us, in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format and have the right to transmit those data to a third party in certain situations

otherwise restrict our processing of your personal information in certain circumstances

claim compensation for damages caused by our breach of any data protection laws
