This project develops methods to assess the impact of regional air mobility (RAM) on overburdened regions across the country. We will develop a framework combining aircraft design and door-to-door air transportation analysis. The framework will be applied to perform a comprehensive feasibility assessment of RAM in rural Appalachia from a geographic, operational, and socio-economic standpoint.
Certification criteria shape the feasible design space and, therefore, must be embedded directly into conceptual aircraft design, not simply checked after the fact.
This project develops methods to explicitly account for certification criteria, including reliability, handling qualities (HQ), and time-marching simulations specified by 14-CFR regulations into a large-scale MDAO framework for aircraft design.
This project develops web-based methods for 3-D geometries and 3-D scientific data and timeseries information visualizations into a common analytic user interface.

This project explores the application of large-scale MDO methods, developed for air vehicles, to the design of ocean vehicles. The results will contribute to the advancement of cost-effective, high-performance maritime systems and inform future ship design methodologies.

As part of the SafeUAS initiative led by Prius Intelli, our group is engaged in developing mechanisms that enable Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to safely disassemble in flight under controlled, commanded conditions. The overarching goal is to ensure that disassembled components descend safely and meet the safety thresholds required for UAS operations over people in the National Airspace System (NAS).
