A list of personal Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) efforts
DEI is best and most effective when it is not an add-on to what one does but is rather a full and whole part of one’s research and teaching or, more broadly, fulfilling one’s role in the workplace. I am first and foremost a strong believer that at the core of DEI efforts is building a safe and equitable workplace climate.
Spring 2016, earned the Basic Equity and Diversity Certificate from the University of Minnesota's OED Office;
2016, developed a Diversity Statement for the IRM Website;
2020, joined the nascent College of Science and Engineering Diversity Alliance;
2020, volunteered to complete the Department's Equity and Diversity Committee website;
2021-22, proposed to extend the pandemic-era mail-in visiting fellowship program into a Remote Access Visiting Fellowship category: "To give the magnetic community greater access to IRM instrumentation, this fellowship allows researchers to submit proposals designed around IRM staff conducting measurements on their behalf. The aim of fellowship is to provide support to researchers with limited resources, limited (or no funding) or an inability to travel";
2022-23, proposed to include a JEDI workshop in the 2023 IRM Conference for Rock Magnetism;
2023, initiated the development of the 2023 IRM Conference for Rock Magnetism Code of Conduct
2023, collaboratively developed the IRM's Diversity and Outreach website content and solely built the webpage;
2024, initiated the development of the IRM Code of Conduct, which subsequently benefited from efforts from other lab and IRM RAC members;
Routinely contribute didactic articles to the IRM Quarterly newsletter, written in an accessible language, which I disseminate through an email list, the IRM website and other media (e.g., ResearchGate). For the IRM Quarterly collection in general, I have indexed the most useful articles in a dedicated webpage.
