P. T. Selbit (1881–1938) was an English magician, inventor and writer who is credited with being the first person to perform the illusion of Sawing a Woman in Half on stage. He also invented Girl Without a Middle, Through the Eye of a Needle and Stretching a Girl, among other illusions that are still performed today by modern magicians.

BOOKS BY AUGUST ROTERBURG
August Roterberg (1867–1928) was a German magician, magic dealer and publisher. He had a successful magic by mail order business in Chicago. Roterberg is credited for developing the magic publishing industry. His books were the first written in the English language expressly for magicians, specifically for sale in magic shops, and not available to the general public. The titles below were secret publications not distributed outside the magic fraternity for nearly 100 years.

John Mulholland (1898-1970) was an American magician, author and magic historian. He wrote the "conjuring" entry for the Encyclopedia Britannica, and was the editor of The Sphinx magazine for 20 years; he was considered to be the leading authority on magic in his day. His magic collection is one of the most important ever amassed; it now belongs to David Copperfield. He was also a spy for the USA.

BOOKS BY JOHN NEVIL MASKELYNE
John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917) was British-born magician who got his start exposing the spiritism performance of the Davenport brothers. He opened the Egyptian Hall in London, a showplace for magic and illusion performances, and operated it for thirty years. He was famously involved in a lawsuit to stop two other magicians from performing a box escape similar to the one in his show; this suit was dropped when Maskelyne refused to reveal the secret of the escape to the court. The secret of his Levitation effect, though, was reportedly sold by his stage technician, Paul Valadon, to Harry Kellar. Maskelyne also is credited with inventing the pay toilet!

Milbourne Christopher (23 March 1914 – 17 June 1984) was a prominent American illusionist, magic historian, and author.
President of the Society of American Magicians, an honorary vice-president to The Magic Circle, and one of the founding members of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, Christopher wrote a number of books, including a biography of Harry Houdini titled Houdini: The Untold Story, a chronicle of his own craft titled The Illustrated History Of Magic, and thousands of essays relating to magic and mentalism.
