For more inspiration and proof of the benefits of travelling with a small bag, check out this post by Chris over at Backpacker Banter: My 25L Backpack Challenge. Yep, he travelled for 3 weeks around Thailand with nothing but a 25L backpack!

I have a whole post over here about travelling with hand luggage toiletries and some nifty little products to make it easier to travel light! These tiny refillable pots are genius to help travel light with things like makeup and lotions.

Wow, great tips thanks. I always try and pack light as who wants to carry around a heavy rucksack but it is difficult to look good. I love your idea of travelling with a friend of the same size. Technically you could then travel very light and just wear her clothes ?

The importance of packing light cannot be overemphasized, but, for your good, I'll try. You'll never meet a traveler who, after five trips, brags: "Every year I pack heavier." You can't travel heavy, happy, and cheap. Pick two.

When you carry your own luggage, it's less likely to get lost, broken, or stolen. Quick, last-minute flight changes become simpler. A small bag sits on your lap on the bus or taxi and stashes easily overhead on an airplane. You don't have to worry about it, and, when you arrive, you can hit the ground running. It's a good feeling. When I land in London, I'm on my way downtown while everyone else stares anxiously at the luggage carousel. When I fly home, I'm the first guy the dog sniffs.

These days, you can also save money by bringing less. While it's still free to check one bag on most overseas trips, you'd likely pay a fee to check a second bag. If you're taking a separate flight within Europe, expect to be charged to check even just one bag.

Cabin Zero packs are also an extremely lightweight choice. Check out the Cabin Zero Classic, which weighs just 760 grams or 1.7 lbs. These packs are super basic though so in terms of features they might not be for everyone. Another very lightweight option is the Osprey Daylite Carry-on Travel Pack, which is only 1kg.

My Samsung Galaxy Tab Lite A7 is absurdly light, weighing only 360 grams. Its modest dimensions are ideal for travel as it will easily fit on a tray table and can be held like a pocketbook. I also got mine on sale for just over 100 Euros, making it far less theft-sensitive than my 1500+ Euro Macbook Air.

Useful tips. I like to travel light and usually put my clothes in a couple of roll bags so I can compress them. There is a trick to make sure they do not crease too much by piling the clothes then rolling the full lot before putting Into the roll bag.

I am also a adept at solid shampoos and they last for a long time while taking no space at all. Decanters are ok but once you run out of your liquid shampoo you have to buy a normal sized bottle! I am off for 4 months to south east Asia so will definitely use your tips.

Or if the wintery bits are towards the end of your trip, you could buy some winter gear when you get there. I did this when travelling Latin America for example. Only once I got to the Andes I bought some alpaca knitwear (a sweater cost like $7). I could still cram thisin my carry-on bag during the last 2 months, but buying it there kept my bag less packed for the first 10 months when I was in hot climates only.

Thanks, Marek. Your blog is an inspiration and your book helped us to plan our own backpacking adventure.

We are both women and have found packing the amount you describe here totally do-able. My question has to do with carry-on limits, though. For most of our flights in Asia and Australia, we have faced a 7 kg weight limit for carry-on bags (not just a size limit). My backpack has never weighed less than 12 kg. Given this limit, is it realistic or should we just get used to coughing up the fee to check bags?

Good advice on the Crocs, Anne. I always have a pair strapped to the outside of my pack. When in the outdoors, I bring the standard slip-on version as camp shoes. When traveling, I take along a lace-up pair that look like boat shoes. Either way, they make a great lightweight option that takes up no interior space.

Travel Light is the story of Halla, a girl born to a king but cast out onto the hills to die. She lives among bears; she lives among dragons. But the time of dragons is passing, and Odin All-Father offers Halla a choice: Will she stay dragonish and hoard wealth and possessions, or will she travel light?

Loved reading this story about Katie and The Travelling Light. Fabulous interview, Carla, getting right to the heart of where and how it all began and allowing us to see Katie in her beautiful light. Inspiring!

Carrying a lighter load makes travelling better for many reasons, including comfort, mobility, flexibility, security and economy. But how can the average over-packer reduce the burden? Here are the five strategies which best sum up how I've put my own luggage on a successful diet, and made my travels more enjoyable.

This may sound like a mundane and time-consuming chore, which could be why so many people don't bother. However, if you're serious about reducing weight by travelling with as little as possible, it is perhaps the most important tip of all.

Many common travel items have lightweight equivalents. If you need to take cutlery, use Lexan plastic utensils instead of stainless steel. Specialist camping shops sell small quick-dry towels that are much lighter and less bulky than what most people use at home. Modern LED headlamps are a fraction of the size and weight of older headlamps or torches. A standard umbrella can be replaced with a small travel umbrella that fits in a back pocket.

You name it, there is probably somebody selling a lightweight equivalent - for a price. That's the main pitfall - getting carried away with buying lighter alternatives can get expensive, which is why omitting things altogether should be considered first.

Less stuff means greater mobility, thus more options. With no checked or awkward-to-manage luggage to limit your travel alternatives, you can better cope with delayed transportation & missed connections (those who check luggage are usually constrained to accompany it), and exploit unexpected opportunities. You can switch to other (sometimes earlier) flights when space is available, and use alternate transport (trains, rental cars, etc.) when it isn't. You needn't arrive at airports as early (no waiting for luggage check-in), and will be among the first to leave (while the hordes wait for baggage carousels and customs inspection queues). You can board trains, trams, and coaches with alacrity. You won't feel compelled to take the first hotel room offered, but can comfortably walk down the street should the ambience be unsuitable or the price unreasonable. You can sell your airplane seat (by volunteering to be "bumped") on full flights. You can travel as an air courier. You can be more spontaneous.

All of the above are concerned with short-term benefits to you. But travelling light also yields long-term benefits to the planet. Less stuff to manufacture. Less use of vehicles and other equipment to move you and your belongings about. Less fuel for those vehicles that do move you. Less greenhouse gas production. Less damage to our celestial home. Greater likelihood of upcoming generations being around and able to do some travelling of their own. (It's not often that the most convenient option is also the most environmentally responsible.)

I have one of these and I love it. I got it for needlework and reading when traveling, but found it was also great for camping. A lantern on the table tends to blind you with the way it throws light, but I was able to make dinner after dark with no frustration with this light. My husband thought it was so great that I ordered one for him as well when we got home.

Hotel lighting is the worst! What I like about this light is that it is LED. The battery life is astounding. We are trying to switch our whole house over to LED bulbs. My husband found some great ceiling flood lights that are LED but have the soft frosted glass we are used to. They look like any other indoor floodlight but should last years and years. He also found regular looking light bulbs that are also LED. No funky shapes like their counterpart fluorescents.

Gift giving is common outside the US. You might want to bring some small gifts. Especially if someone makes you a home cooked meal or shows great hospitality. Handmade items are always appreciated. A small needlework, a drawing, a small bag or pouch decorated by hand. Postcards from your home town, chocolate, small pins, LED lights, small calculator, or a key chain with something nifty on it. A great way to delight small children is learn to make animals out of balloons.

1. Ask whether you actually need to travel super-light at all. If shedding a few pounds is going to cost a lot of pounds I usually prefer just to have a slightly heavier pack and regard it as extra-training!

2. Having said that, it certainly is nice to travel light. A great way to do this on a long trip is to imagine you are going away just for a weekend. Because you do not actually need a lot more gear for a year-long journey than an over-nighter.

A trip out to La Spezia and then the boat ride out to the Cinque Terres proved more fruitful however. This World Heritage Site gets very crowded in the summer season but is well worth a visit and makes great photographs. We arrived in the heat of July and there were a lot of sights to see, another good reason to be travelling light. I was very grateful not to be schlepping around with a big heavy rucksack full of cameras and lenses.

Figuring how to travel light with travel tech takes some planning and some evaluation on what you really need for your travels. What's essential technology for one person is simply not a key item for someone else. be457b7860
