Cassie is the head witch of COVEN and its de facto mother figure. Cassie believes in kindness, using her immense spiritual power for healing—but should anyone lay a hand on her family, she has no qualms about protecting them by any means necessary. (character description written by the narrative team)
Her overall character is a reflection of Haumea, the mother of many important gods in Hawaiian creation mythology, and inspired by the legend of Kapaemahu. She takes great pride in being a mahu woman, hence her physique and features reflecting those of Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu (Kumu Hina).
The first design for Cassie was intended to portray a business casual outfit, while also considering aspects of Hawaiian culture. For this design process, I pulled references from traditional Hawaiian clothing, iconography and imagery, as well as how they make use of color in their clothing. Many minor details in this design were included to make Cassie represent authentic Hawaiian women.
In order to create a better sense of cohesiveness between characters, Cassie was redesigned to portray more of a tech-based outfit with less hints of Hawaiian culture. For this redesign, I focused more of shape language and making Cassie appear to be more of a "boss lady"Â compared to the other characters. Color studies were later done to make use of the predetermined colors of ether.
As well as incorporating Hawaiian culture in Cassie's outfit, it felt important to include accurate Hawaiian tattoos on her body as well. For these designs, I conducted research on Hawaiian tattoo art (kakau) and what particular shapes and patterns represent. Considering her personality and pride in being a mahu woman, the majority of the tattoos represent femininity, power, and defense against evil spirits.
Note: another artist on the team relined all of the characters, while I recolored and shaded them
A photograph, kept in a desk frame, that shows a woman holding a child and a man behind her. The face of the man and the child are burned and/or ripped leaving just the woman's face in the center.
Ether state reveals the faces of the man and child. The man and woman's eyes are concealed, although the child's are not. Meanwhile, the child glows purple.
A photo of a unrecognizable woman on a hospital bed. The photo contains a hole over the face of the woman.
Ether state reveals that the woman looks similar to the woman in the burned photograph, although her eyes are concealed. She has ulcers across her face that glow a faint purple, as a glowing purple light leaks from all of her orifices.
A blueprint of an unknown prototype, which contains a hole that covers the majority of the design.
Ether state reveals that this is a version of the prosthesis that Zhay wears.
