GEOG 465

The goals of this course are to help you:

1. Develop your ability to think critically, spatially, and to gain practical skills in geo-data acquisition, parsing

and data management

2. Become proficient in the use of GIS tools to conduct spatial analyses and build maps that are fit-for-

purpose and effectively convey the information to a specific audience

3. Build confidence in teaching your-self how to undertake analyses using GIS, troubleshooting problems in

GIS, and seeking help from the GIS community to solve your project-based questions

4. Become effective in building maps that can be shared with non-GIS users (e.g. PDF maps and interactive

web-based GIS maps)

5. Conceptualize, organize, manage and execute a comprehensive GIS project which explores a topic related to

your specific academic or professional interest. This will help you gain experience in information-based

environmental decision making by completing a GIS project that maps spatio-temporal trends and

integrates spatial database analyses, design and visualizations
