To the left is the journey map that I created in 2023 during my freshman year. It shows what I believe to be the most significant milestones in my life that got me to the point of attending IU Indy (IUPUI at the time).
I still consider those choices and events to be significant milestones in my life, but there have been more things that have happened since then. Below, you can see an updated Journey Map that is meant to be an addition to the original.
I had not fully figured out who I was in 2023. I don't think I will ever fully figure out who I am because I am a constantly evolving person with changing priorities and dreams. That being said, I think I have a better grasp of who I am now and the journey that has gotten me here. There are steps in my journey that I regret, but ultimately, I would not change anything about where I am and how I got here. I am incredibly grateful to my past self for getting me to where I am. I truly owe it to him to do my best to continue to grow.
It is crazy to me to think how all of these small decisions snowballed into creating who I am today. It reminds me of the Butterfly Effect created by a meteorologist to explain how one simple action, like the flap of a butterfly's wings, could have drastic and often unpredictable impacts on a system as a whole. These systems are so easily sensitive to the early conditions that affect them. I feel like my life so far has been very similar. I could never have known how the choices I made in college or even before college would shape me into the person that I am today.
Looking back at my journey through college, I am genuinely amazed at where I am today. I knew going into college that I did not want to only grow academically. I wanted to grow in every aspect of my life. To me, this included spiritual, physical, and mental growth.
I approached all of these in different ways, but they guided how I approached opportunities in college. I joined Chi Alpha to maintain spiritual growth. I knew I wanted to get more active, so I chose to join a rowing club for my physical growth. The people I surrounded myself with daily poured more into my mental health than they will ever fully know, so I owe them a lot of thanks as well. As far as academic growth, I added minors in graphic design and mathematics to my computer science degree to make me a more well-rounded scholar. I wanted to find things that added value to my computer science degree, and these both seemed like good fits in different ways.
Looking back, I cannot even begin to imagine what my life would be like now if I hadn't scanned the qr code of the guy in Taylor Courtyard with a cool Jaguars Rowing Varsity jacket, or answered an invite from a friend to check out the ministry that their friend was starting. I have met so many people because of those decisions. Not only did I grow in all of those areas, but I also gained lifelong friendships as an even greater pay off. I look forward to continued growth in my physical, mental, spiritual, and analytical selves in the future, in whatever way that looks like. I believe what rang true in 2023 is an ever more present truth in 2026. Ultimately, I want to be a kind and welcoming person who feels like a sanctuary to others. I believe if I do this, everything else should fall into place accordingly.
