The main word you will see on restaurant signs is "GUACHINCHE", because in Tenerife, this type of establishment is not a restaurant or tavern.
According to the Canarian Academy of Language, a guachinche is "a place or shop of popular character where typical food and wine of the country are served". In the past, farmers who cultivated vines would prepare a room in the house or farm to sell their wine. To serve with the wine, typical Canarian food was offered, at a very good price. When the wine season was over, these establishments closed until the new harvest.
Nowadays, a guachinche is an establishment where you can enjoy typical Canarian food. The portions are usually generous, to be shared among table companions and the prices are good. Most of them can be found on the north side of the island.
Some typical dishes of Canarian cuisine are: queso asado (grilled cheese), ropa vieja (chickpeas, vegetables and meat), escaldón de gofio (gofio paste with broth), carne fiesta (fried pork meat with potatoes), lapas (limpets), pulpo (octopus), carne cabra (stewed goat meat), costillas con papas y piña (ribs with potatoes and corn)...
In this section I leave you some suggestions of guachinches, restaurants or places to have a drink with good views.
