TEACHING METHODS OF THE TEACHERS THAT YOU OBSERVED
TEACHING METHODS OF THE TEACHERS THAT YOU OBSERVED
Direct Instruction - The teacher directly discusses the lesson to the students using the material prepared. It is a teacher-centered approach, where the teacher teaches in a clear and systematic manner all the concepts and skills in the lesson. This includes the introduction of the objectives in the beginning of the lesson, followed by demonstrating the skill or the concept. After the demonstration, the students will be guided by the teacher to practice. After the practice, the students will perform by themselves and lastly, the students will be assessed through an assessment or performance task. For example in grammar, ithe teacher will first explain the rules of grammar, then will give sample sentences, after that, the students will form their own sentences following the structure. The teacher will then assess the performance of the students by giving a quiz.
Experiential Learning - I have observed this strategy during the discussion of "Tell the Time" topic. The teacher asked the students to set the time using a real clock. This helped the students gain realistic experience in setting the time rather than just answering it in an activity. This strategy requires the active participation of the students because it is hands-on learning. It means that in order for the students to learn, they will perform the activity or procedure themselves. Through this, the students will be able to experience and come up with their own understanding about the matte. Examples of experiential learning are role playing, experiments, simulations and project-based learning.
Collaborative Learning - It's a strategy where the teacher gives a group activity for the students to complete. This encourages the students together for them to finish their activity. With this strategy, the students will develop their communication skills, critical thinking skills, and develop their relationship with their classmates. The students will work depending on their learning styles.
Technology Enhanced Learning - It is the use of technological tools and other online resources being integrated in the classroom to improve the teaching and learning process. This strategy is an effective tool to make learning more interesting, fun and engaging. Example of this is showing a video from YouTube to the students about grammatical rules. If the lesson is about literature, the teacher can show a video about the partcicular story for the students to further understand and visualize it for better understanding
Aside from the books, another very important learning material is the PowerPoint Presentation because it is a tool use to show images, text, audios, videos and animations. It is a powerful tool to make the discussion more creative, engaging and to enhance understanding. PowerPoint Presentations can help visual learners to learn better by showing images, graphs, videos and diagrams.
The school is equipped with technological materials. Inside the classrooms, there are projectors that are used to display the visual from the laptop and other sources. One of the great advantages of having projector in every classroom is that it promotes the different learning styles of the students, such as visual, auditory and inaesthetic. Compared to traditional material (blackboard and eraser), projectors can help the teachers save time because it reduces the need for writing everything manually. The use of projector makes the discussion more fun and engaging, promoting the student's active participation and learning.
SMP UMP supports technology-based learning. Every student received a personal laptop that they could use for their learning. Since the world is becoming more advance, having a personal laptop would be a big help especially in making their assignments, projects and other activities.
The school also have computer laboratory with air-conditioning to make sure that the students are comfortable. This would help the students learn effectively about technology that will be a great help in the real world especially not only it will be beneficial for them inside the school but they can also apply all their learnings to face reality.
Even us, the student teachers from Capiz State University, were allowed to borrow a laptop. It really helped us to prepare our materials for our teaching. Not only that they let us borrow laptop, but we are also given access to the internet connection, making our preparation easier and convenient.
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS USED BY THE TEACHERS
UMP UMP has an English Club where students signed in to learn English every Thursday afternoon after the class. Those students are divided according to their English level. Teachers are assigned to teach the group of students.
Us, the student interns from Capiz State University participated the English club. We are also assigned to teach the students. As for me, I'm assigned to teach the upper level, girls. What makes this very authentic is that every Thursday, there is different aspect to learn (writing, reading, speaking and listening). The first time, I participated in English club, me and the students had a conversation one by one about their interest. For example, I asked them about their favorite food and tell me about it, or about their hobbies. The students have to respond to me in English so that they can practice their speaking. The second time I participated, the activity was that, the students have to sell their products and negotiate with me and other students. They have to encourage the costumers to buy, using English language.
And the last time I participated, the students were tasked to write a farewell letter to me in English to practice their writing. It was a very emotional moment for me because I'm glad that I was able to join them for three times, yet their letters were full of words saying that they were thankful and they will miss me when I go back to Philippines.
