Lockpick EntertainmentWriter, map and mission designer, UI and UX designer and forum moderator on Dreamlords The Reawakening, an MMORTS with a management side to it.
The management part of the game would be played in a browser, while battles would be played in a separate game client.
My role initially consisted of GUI design mockups for the game client, but later evolved into tool-making (see Workflow Optimization below) and then PvE mission design and implementation. I also did the majority of the writing in the game of which there was a lot (items, descriptions, skills, tutorials, ...) and had constant contact with our community via forums.
Workflow optimization: Tweaking or adding the hundreds and thousands of units and items of the game was done through a web interface and it took a lot of time time for every single entry. Making small sweeping changes was almost impossible because it would take a person many hours to days and weeks to enter all the values and wait for the web tool to save and refresh, over and over again. I therefore took the initiative to make exporters (using Visual Basic) for our massive Excel sheets into XML. The programmers made an importer on the server side. With the exporter/importer, we could make sweeping changes to all values in the game with the click of 2 buttons.
