How to Promote the Week Without Driving Challenge Sept. 30-Oct. 6
There are at least two ways you can help promote the Week Without Driving Sept. 30-Oct. 6: pledge to try not driving yourself and ask others to take the pledge as well. The idea is to highlight what between 30 and 40 percent of Dane County’s population experiences every day, not driving. That figure is based on research for a Wisconsin Department of Transportation advisory committee. They developed developed an interactive map showing the non-driver population by county, city, village and township throughout the state. You can see the enlarged part of the map for Dane County here. Non-drivers include aging adults, youths, low-income individuals, those with various disabilities, and those who prefer not to drive.
Please note that the Dane County Board issued a special resolution recognizing the event.
Take the pledge to not to drive during the week of Sept. 30 – Oct. 6. Sign up so you are counted re. this nationwide event. You may wish to keep track of your movements using the downloadable Transportation Diary template. Participants try to ask for or pay for rides; take public transit; walk, roll, scoot or bike. And if they absolutely must, they drive. But they are asked to consider what someone without that choice would have had to give up when they do so. You may also wish to comment on why you felt you had to drive.
Ask others to take the pledge as well. “Others” can be personal friends, workmates, acquaintances, or potentially influential community leaders who can serve as role models for others. Some of those leaders might be your elected officials. You can find out who your elected officials are at https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/My-Elected-Officials when you put in your address. The county has a tool for identifying who your supervisor is at https://dcimapapps.countyofdane.com/supervisors/. You can find out who your state representatives are at https://maps.legis.wisconsin.gov/?version=2022. Ask any and all of them to sign up and keep a Transportation Diary.
