PROPOSAL FOR THE CREATION OF A COMMERCIAL CITY IN THE KETA LAGOON.
The Keta Lagoon, which is the largest lagoon and body of water in West Africa, has been a source of livelihood for the communities around the lagoon for centuries.
Its water source is water flowing from the Volta, Tordzi, Kplikpa and the sea.
In recent years, the lagoon has silted up, leading to flooding of communities, mainly in the Shime region, during the rainy season. This situation is due to sediments carried by floods arriving in the lagoon from the rivers mentioned above.
With the growing population in communities along the lagoon, enormous pressure has been placed on the lagoon due to fishing activities. This situation has led to worsening poverty in communities along the lagoon. Most people deserted these communities in search of greener pastures.
The interesting and ironic aspect of this situation is that in the 1960s and 1970s, the income from fish harvested from fishing activities in the lagoon was used to educate most of the sons and daughters of Anloland.
The big names you hear from Anloland have benefited from this natural resource but with this sad turn of events I find it hard to understand why these people can't come together to extract the resources and knowledge they have acquired to change the current state of the natural resource. which has been handed down to us unchanged for centuries.
Judging by other countries, natural resources will not be found anywhere other than Africa and people will continue to be poor.
So I want to suggest through this proposal that it is time that we come together as a people who have benefited from the lagoon through the acquisition of knowledge to reflect to see if we cannot create a 100,000 acre land in the lagoon by massive dredging to do the following:
Build a trade city to:
build a world-class conference center to host national and international conferences.
Facilitate the construction of 5-star, 4-star and 3-star hotels for hosts who will visit the region.
Deepening the lagoon to revamp the fishing industry for which Keta was renowned.
Promote nautical tourism on the lagoon and also among people who will attend conferences in the region.
Creating jobs for our abundant youth who are still leaving the region to seek greener pastures elsewhere, thereby growing the economies of these regions.
I know that some environmentalists will oppose my proposal, but I am sure that the people who introduced the environmental protection course will not allow this lagoon to remain in its natural state as it was created by God now she's no longer useful. We cannot continue to blame God if in His wisdom He has given us this resource and we cannot add to it for the benefit of our people.
To me, we cannot continue to admire government when we are told that opportunity in the government sector is blocked while thousands of our citizens graduate each year.
As individuals, we cannot contribute to the financing of this project that I am examining due to the enormous cost involved in its proper execution, but with the type of human resources produced by this lagoon, we can put pen to paper to convince those who have the resources to come and develop the lagoon for us. There is a commercial benefit for anyone investing in this project; it will surely be a win-win situation. The situation and life of our people will change if we commit to it and believe me, it will not take more than 20 years for the name of Keta to appear again not only on the national map but also on the international map.
With all due respect, this is a humble challenge to our people for consideration. It’s possible, let’s enrich it to see what we can do.
