In this course the intern will study, research, and critique dances within SDSU’s Dance Program and the larger San Diego dance community in an effort to reveal some of the inner workings of the process rather than jumping to the evaluation of the final product.The core of the internship is to question the nature of dance criticism inspired by CultureBot in New York City.
How can interviews and written critiques sell and value an artist?
How might new ways of writing, documenting, and dialoguing about dance contribute to the San Diego Dance Community?
How can the authors of dance criticism and commentary be changed by the dances emerging in San Diego?
What are the relationships between judgement, advice, and feedback?
How can one equalize the power structure between critique and the artist?
Identify bias by personal aesthetics in order to minimize their influence while analyzing dance.
Distinguish the roles that dance critics play within the form itself and the communities as a whole.
Practicing and applying the use of social media to understand audiences, artists, algorithms, etc.
