Service Learning Day @ Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Volunteering and making a difference in the golden years of the elderly

On 18th April 2023, my class, 22A01, had the privilege of visiting Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital and spending some quality time with elderly patients. It was a heartwarming experience that left a lasting impression on all of us.

We started our visit with a lovely morning of stretching and walking with the patients at the park connector that links our campus to the hospital. It was heartwarming to see how excited they were, with most of them waving to anyone they met along the way. They shared with us that they rarely go out for walks together as a group due to short staffing at the hospital, making our visit all the more special to them. Despite being bound to wheelchairs, they still enjoyed the companionship of group walks. After the walk, we engaged in a meaningful activity of painting pots and planting with the patients. It was inspiring to witness their enthusiasm and joy as they got their hands dirty in the soil, nurturing the plants with care. Prior to our visit, me and my classmates who were OGLs this year too, taught our class the orientation dance we practised as OGLs to put together a performance for the elderly. It was heartening to see the smiles on their faces and know that our efforts brought them joy. Personally, I cherished the opportunity to converse with them in my mother tongue and dialect, as I rarely get the chance to use these languages in a formal setting. As our visit was coming to an end, the patients touched our hearts with their kind words. They expressed how much they would miss us and some of them even shed tears. It was a touching moment that made us realise the impact of our visit on their lives. It was evident that our presence and interaction with them had brought them happiness and companionship, and we were grateful to have been able to make a difference in their lives, even if it was for a brief moment.

In conclusion, our visit to Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital was a truly enriching experience. It was a reminder of the importance of spending time with the elderly and showing them care and affection. It also made us appreciate the value of simple gestures, such as a walk in the park or a dance performance, in bringing joy to others. We left the hospital with grateful hearts and a deeper understanding of the needs and emotions of the elderly, and we will carry these lessons with us as we continue to serve our community in the future.

MOM-MOE: Migrant Workers Befriending

A day well spent making friends with our migrant brothers

On 28th August 2022, in partnership with The Friends of ACE (FACE), 18 migrant brothers came over to our campus! They were hosted by my class, 22A01, in hopes to increase cohesion between migrant workers and students, and building the connection between the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). I gave them a tour around our school campus and we had the chance to know one another better.

I was amused by all of the different stories that they had to tell and overall, it was an enlightening experience for me as I had never had a conversation with a migrant worker about their lives nor heard about what they thought of Singapore. Most of them were sociable and friendly and were willing to share their life experiences and how grateful they were to visit a school in Singapore and chat with students as friends. It is saddening that even though they are part of our community, they actually never had the chance to allow their voices to be heard. Our class also taught our migrant brothers to play traditional Singaporean games and they loved Chapteh the most. We ended off the day eating pizza together and took a couple of photos for memory's sake too!

Prior to this day, our class had visited Our Migrant Workers Gallery and made appreciation videos for migrant workers too. I am extremely happy to have had this wonderful opportunity to hear from them about their aspirations and hopes for the future and show my gratitude towards them. I hope to meet them again and learn their favourite sport, Cricket!
