Citrus!

This work was done as a part of the Orange Public Library's Teen Art Contest,

My submission won 1st overall, and was selected as the promo piece for the following year's local comic convention. I submitted work for webpage banners, library card covers, and poster prints. 

These were made in Procreate. 

Design Decisions: 

Having created a hero character Citrus, it only felt right to design it after the name. 

Her hair and costume resemble an Orange, with orange being the main color of the overall costume. 

The original design didn't come with a mask, and story concept-wise, I was hoping to get away with a Clark Kent/ Superman situation. But I have never been fond of the trope and thought the mask would be a cool addition. The original mask was more similar to the Batman cowl, but I thought it looked too goofy to have someone fly around saving people with an orange head.  

The hair was the design part I remember being the proudest of at the time; I knew I wanted more orange beyond the costume but didn't know what else to add to the design that wouldn't be too corny. I eventually decided on green hair to resemble leaves, then ended up doubling down on the concept and just going full leaves for hair. It was cute! It was campy! It was dorky! but I loved it, and the jaggedness of the hair form was also very interesting to play with. 

For costume design, I knew I wanted a bodysuit or at least something with pants for practicality's sake. 

Retrospecs:

1. Costume color inconsistency :

I wanted to incorporate the orange/blue complimentary and did so with the bodysuit and the cape, but forgot about the neckpiece and the gloves. For the future, if/when I ever decide to make a Citrus(v.3), I think I would stick to the Orange/Green

2. Color and Constrast corrections: 

I shaded with hues, but was inconsistent about it, I also didn't add very much contrast between the face and the neck.
