The DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council of Arcadia Florida was founded in 2006 to advocate, support, and develop the cultural climate of DeSoto County by promoting artists and encouraging the enjoyment of the arts and participation by our residents, students and visitors. Our goal is to make all of the arts - visual, literary and performing - an important part of our community and accessible to everyone, and to promote the creativity of our members.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Please come meet on April 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a planning workshop at my Real Estate office, 207 E. Magnolia Street. We will be having pizza and talking about the upcoming year of activities. Let us now if you can attend so we can order enough pizza for everyone.

Let me say that I am deeply humbled and privileged to be entrusted with the responsibility of being the new president of the DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council. I want to thank Pamela Davis for her service, and also our dedicated Board of Directors and Officers. I will strive to be the best leader possible. But the truth is that the most important person in this organization is YOU. With you being involved, we are stronger and more effective. It really takes all of us working together to make this a better council. And we do this every day.

Over the years the organization has grown and we have accomplished a tremendous amount. Many success stories include the Plein Air Paint-out, the Art of the River, and the annual member shows are all wonderful! The Writer's Group and Photography Group, Sip 'n Paints and children's programs are still active and going strong. I will be visiting these groups over the next few weeks. But can we do more? Wouldn't you like to see a theater group again, maybe some house concerts from touring musicians, and more involvement with youth?

I must say that we have a great core of workers and doers, and you know who you are. Thank you for all you do! We will be having a celebration dinner soon to recognize and reward those who volunteer, and our sponsors.

As we move this organization forward, YOU are what makes us better, so please continue to do what you can to make our organization the best it can be, starting with our planning meeting next Wednesday night.

-President, Mac Martin

GIVING CHALLENGE

SUPPORT ART EDUCATION IN DESOTO COUNTY SCHOOLS

Come out and see the DeSoto Schools District Art Show at SFSC on Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and support the arts in DeSoto County Schools. See some awesome art by our students, and drop a few bills in the collection can or purchase tickets to vote for people's choice recipient. All funds collected will be distributed equally among the schools for classroom art supplies. Individual schools may have tables offering baked goods, art activities and other things for a small donation. Each school will keep their earnings for art department supplies.

Art teachers often spend dollars out of their own pockets for needed classroom supplies. DeSoto Arts is collecting money to donate to the school art programs.

CAN'T MAKE THE SHOW? DONATE ANY AMOUNT IN $5 INCREMENTS TO DAHC BETWEEN NOW AND MAY 5 AND WE WILL FORWARD THE FUNDS COLLECTED TO THE SCHOOLS.

DAHC is the Local Arts Agency for DeSoto County and is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
